BotaniCERT is a company specializing in botanical expertise and the authentication of natural ingredients. Based in Grasse, it supports companies in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and agri-food sectors in validating the quality and authenticity of their plant-based raw materials. Meet the Managing Director of BotaniCERT, Loïc Loffredo.

Introduce yourself and your business.

At BotaniCERT, we are a laboratory specializing in plant analysis. We work mainly with the food supplement, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Our mission is to guarantee the authenticity of plant-based products, to ensure that they do not contain any falsification and to provide a precise analysis of their composition. This information allows us to optimally promote natural ingredients. We recently filed a quality mark (Botani+) which finally allows consumers to have a label directing them towards quality products based on scientific criteria. The analyses used to obtain this label use cutting-edge techniques and methodology that are constantly being improved.

What are the data issues encountered by BotaniCERT?

Thanks to our latest generation analytical equipment, we generate extremely rich data. However, their volume and complexity make manual processing unviable for everyday use. It is therefore essential to develop efficient and suitable tools to automate and optimize their processing efficiently. In addition, the analyses of our Botani+ quality brand are particularly rigorous and demanding and require very high precision.

What processes and tools have you implemented?

We use some existing tools, but they do not cover the entire process of processing our data, from their acquisition to obtaining the final results that interest us.

How has this collaboration enabled you to achieve your innovation objectives?

This collaboration has helped us clarify and structure our needs, making them more accessible and understandable. This has particularly facilitated the preparation and submission of grant applications to support our innovation projects.

What benefits have you seen after Audrey from Data Acteur’s intervention?

Thanks to Audrey’s intervention, we were able to carry out a clear and precise inventory of our needs, while benefiting from an in-depth understanding of our challenges. The document produced is not only an excellent support for our funding applications, but it also constitutes a solid basis for presenting our approach to a future data scientist that we plan to recruit internally.

What advice would you give to organizations that are hesitant to invest in effective management and valorization of their data?

Carrying out a precise inventory of your needs is a key step. This allowed us to clearly formalize the project that we wish to develop and to structure it effectively in order to be able to defend it in the context of funding applications. Investing in such an approach is essential to lay solid foundations and maximize your chances of success.

In a world where data must be considered a real lever for business performance, data management and data enhancement are no longer an option, but a necessity. However, many SMEs and mid-caps still underestimate the impact of this treasure on their business and its strategy, a treasure that requires effective management and enhancement to unlock its full potential. This article aims to convince you, managers, to adopt these practices.

Did you know that only 30% of a company’s data is actually enhanced?

Data, even if basic, can guide crucial decision-making when properly analyzed. Each piece of data you collect — whether it is customer information, internal processes or financial results, for example — is an opportunity for improvement or innovation.

The benefits of a data management and enhancement strategy

By adopting a proactive approach, you will be able to observe major transformations in your company. Here are some concrete examples of direct impact:

Improve productivity: By structuring and optimizing your internal processes with a data-driven focus, you gain in efficiency.

Stimulate revenue growth: Develop new products or services based on the analysis of your existing data.

Define a precise marketing strategy: Identify and target your prospects better thanks to a better understanding of your customers and their needs.

Optimize customer acquisition: Refine your campaigns and reduce costs by accurately qualifying your prospects.

Facilitate budget management: Share clear and reliable data between your teams and partners to avoid errors.

Reduce environmental impact: Analyze your production flows to limit waste and manage your ecological commitments.

Strengthen knowledge sharing: Centralize and disseminate knowledge to facilitate the work of new employees and promote skills development.

These improvements are not just promises, but concrete results obtained thanks to appropriate support.

Drive change: the key steps to successful data management

The success of a data management project is based on structured change management. Here are two essential steps to maximize your results:

Co-construct roles and responsibilities: effective data management begins with co-constructing everyone’s interventions throughout the data lifecycle. Who will be responsible for defining data, sharing this knowledge, collecting it, validating it, analyzing it? Involve your employees and you will favor collective ownership of the process.

Measure your progress: develop key performance indicators (KPIs) adapted to your data management objectives. Whether to monitor gradual adoption, the effectiveness of decision-making, or the reduction of environmental or social costs, these KPIs allow you to identify the concrete benefits of your initiatives and adjust your actions as you go along.

With structured support and an appropriate methodology, you can integrate data management into your overall strategy, so that it becomes a pillar of your transformation.

Data at the service of the ecological and social transition

At Data Acteur, we firmly believe that data is a real springboard to accelerate the ecological transition and take action. We start from a simple principle: « as long as you don’t know where you’re starting from, you can’t know how to reduce it ». Data allows you to better understand the environmental footprint of human activities and identify concrete levers for improvement.

Thanks to intelligent use of data, you can optimize your processes, reduce your ecological impact, and make more informed decisions. For example, by tracking your production flows or resources, you identify inefficiencies or waste and thus take measures to correct them quickly.

At Data Acteur, we also integrate a social dimension into each of our projects. For us, data must put people back in their added value as well as at the heart of decisions. By valuing your teams and their expertise, we help you create a virtuous circle between operational excellence, sustainability, and well-being.

A unique method to make your business shine

Data Acteur supports SMEs and ETIs in revealing their often hidden potential, by transforming their data into strategic actions, promoting their development.

Every day, our methodologies help you to:

Reveal your existing and untapped digital assets,

Accelerate your digital and ecological transitions,

Boost your growth by opening up new opportunities.

“Audrey not only supports us in implementing the action plan and coaching the data team, but she also helped us develop our first data valuation for our customers. Her intervention was extremely beneficial in acculturating both our internal employees and our customers on the use of data, taking into account the maturity of each. Thanks to her invaluable help, we were able to review our offer to guarantee that our customers can follow each step, without getting lost along the way.” Laure Gajetti, Data Scientist at Bigsool.

Conclusion: data, an opportunity for SMEs and ETIs

Investing in data management and valuation is a strategic investment. SMEs and mid-caps embarking on this path are equipping themselves with the processes and methods needed to better understand their markets, optimize their processes, and adapt to the challenges of today and tomorrow. In an increasingly competitive environment, data is becoming a key differentiator.

The question is no longer whether you should adopt this new profession, but how you will do it today.

Contact us today to benefit from personalized support tailored to the challenges of your company. Together, let’s reveal the hidden potential of your data!

Data Management: An Essential Pillar to Enhance the Value of Your Data

In a world where data has become a strategic asset for companies, the effective management of this data — known as Data Management — is crucial. This process is not limited to the simple collection and storage of information; it is a set of practices aimed at maximizing the value of data, while ensuring its consistency and security.

What is Data Management?

Data Management is defined as a set of methods, processes and tools designed to manage data throughout its life cycle. This includes its collection, storage, organization, protection and analysis. The ultimate goal is to transform this data into a strategic asset, aligned with the company’s objectives and in compliance with current regulations. Data Management encompasses 11 disciplines, which cover both technical aspects, security, data quality and data governance.

The first technical disciplines: architecture, modeling and storage

The first steps of Data Management concern the structure and organization of data.

Architecture: It consists of designing a technical environment optimized for the performance, costs and functionalities of data management systems.

Modeling: This discipline involves discovering, analyzing and representing data in a conceptual model that serves as a basis for its management.

Storage: Data storage is a crucial aspect that includes the design and management of the space needed to store this data, ensuring that it remains accessible and useful throughout its life cycle.

Imagine building a house: the architecture is the overall plan, the modeling represents the detailed plans, and the storage corresponds to the arrangement of the rooms with furniture.

Data security and interoperability

Once the data is organized, it is essential to ensure that it is protected and can be shared effectively.

Security: This involves putting in place strict policies to control access to data, defining who can access it, why, and for what purpose.

Interoperability: This concept refers to the ability of data to be shared and used across different systems and departments in a consistent manner.

Returning to our house analogy: security is like installing locks on doors, while interoperability is about ensuring that these doors allow for smooth communication between different rooms.

Content and Reference Data Management

Beyond the technical aspects, Data Management also focuses on the management of content and reference data.

Document and Content Management: This involves the management of semi-structured or unstructured data, such as documents and multimedia files.

Reference and Master Data: This data, often transversal, is essential to ensure the consistency and quality of information used throughout the company.

In our imaginary house, these disciplines concern how you organize and manage standardized furniture (structured) and furniture that you design according to your specific needs (unstructured).

Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence

Once the data is properly managed and secured, it must be accessible and usable by the company’s business lines.

Data Warehousing: This process consists of centralizing data to facilitate its analysis and use by the different branches of the company.

Business Intelligence: This allows data to be transformed into actionable information via data visualization and other analytical tools.

In our house, this step amounts to allowing each member of the family to rearrange the furniture as they wish to arrange a room to their taste.

Metadata: the dictionaries of your data

Metadata is information that describes other data, thus helping to understand and interpret the available information. It serves as a guide for the use and management of data.

Think of it as a dictionary for the furniture in our home: it describes each item, its characteristics, and how it should be used.

Data Quality: The Key to Reliability

Data quality is essential to ensure that the information used for decision-making is reliable and accurate. Managers need to have confidence in the data they use, otherwise decisions based on faulty information could cost the company dearly.

In our home, this means ensuring that each piece of furniture is in good condition and well placed so that the home is functional and pleasant to live in.

Data Governance: Establishing a Data Culture

To conclude this series, data governance is the discipline that integrates data management into the company culture. It clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of each person in terms of data management.

This means ensuring that in our home, each person knows exactly what their role is, whether it is for the architecture, the choice of furniture or the layout of the rooms, thus contributing to a harmonious and functional environment.

Conclusion

Data Management is much more than a set of techniques and processes: it is a strategic pillar that, when well executed, allows the company to take full advantage of its data, ensuring its quality, security and accessibility. By following these principles, each company can transform its data into a real lever for growth and innovation.

My name is Audrey Lamy Martinot and I am passionate about data science (Business Intelligence, data visualization, data mining, modeling and prediction) and data management. With more than 20 years of experience in these fields, in 2021 I founded Data Acteur, a strategic consulting firm specializing in data management and valorization.

My main objective is to help my clients, companies and communities, to fully exploit the potential of their data. I propose to develop diagnostics to assess the data maturity of the organization, define concrete action plans and support their implementation.

Holder of a master’s degree in statistics and econometrics, I am also certified by the international association DAMA (Data Management). After several years as an employee, I chose to transmit and share my skills with different organizations. Convinced that « None of us knows what we all know together » (Lao Tzu), I created Data Acteur to promote knowledge sharing and learning every day. My work allows me to adapt to each sector of activity and all functions within the company.

As part of my activity, I carry out data maturity diagnostics, define action plans to integrate data into the daily life of companies and communities (development of data culture), and set up data governance (roles and responsibilities). I also support future CDOs through coaching and participate in the creation of data offices in various SMEs. My experience includes in particular the definition and implementation of the data strategy, project management on data storage solutions (datawarehouse, datalake) and their use, management of my clients’ data assets, as well as the development of data quality strategies. These elements also aim to meet regulatory requirements, such as Solvency 2 and the GDPR.

I also work in the fields of R&D and innovation, by leading ideation workshops, reviewing processes and supporting the integration of data into the daily lives of teams.

In addition to these activities, I teach in master’s programs to share my expertise in data strategy, data management, data governance, change management, project management and collective intelligence, thus helping to train the next generation of business professionals who discuss with data offices.

Nowadays, data office services are multiplying, and it is essential that everyone understands the skills and missions of other professions. For example, a future CFO must know how to exploit the strengths of a data office to improve their understanding of data and refine their decision-making in finance.

Do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your needs in terms of managing and enhancing your data.‌

1/ Introduce your company and your role

Hello, I am Laure Gajetti, Data Scientist at Bigsool. Bigsool is an innovative company specializing in the development of construction site monitoring software for the construction industry. Our flagship product, Archipad, is a complete solution for site visits, accessible from any browser thanks to Archipad Cloud, as well as on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) via the Archipad application.

Since its creation in 2010, Bigsool has evolved to integrate advanced cloud synchronization features, securing more than 150,000 construction site projects on our secure drive.

As a Data Scientist at Bigsool, my role is to enhance the value of the company’s data (from our application data to construction site data), by proposing continuous improvements for Archipad. My work also includes data management, ensuring its integrity, quality and security, a crucial step for the success of data enhancement projects.

2/ How is data enhancement strategic for your company? What should it address?

At Bigsool, our priority has always been and remains the customer. We strive to offer, through our software, new features designed to improve the daily lives of managers, employees and construction professionals in general.

Our construction site monitoring solution, Archipad, allows our customers to save considerable time in their daily tasks, particularly when generating reports after site visits. Data enhancement is part of this objective by offering a cross-sectional view of their projects and helping them make informed decisions.

3/ Why did you choose Data Acteur?

After launching many data projects, we often found ourselves with unreliable results or low added value. The same problem kept coming up: data quality, functional and technical knowledge of the data, and the difficulty of maintenance due to database modifications.

We understood that working on data is not the sole responsibility of the dedicated department, but involves all of the company’s employees. It is essential to set up data governance and raise awareness among all business stakeholders, as well as our partners, of the importance of data.

To assess our maturity in terms of internal data management, we decided to call on Data Acteur.

4/ What specific missions have you entrusted to Data Acteur?

First of all, Data Acteur carried out a data diagnosis through workshops organized with our main departments: company management, business management, Archipad solution developer management, marketing management, financial management, and HR management. These workshops made it possible to clearly identify the issues to be resolved and the areas for improvement (around pillars such as governance, quality, security, acculturation for example). At the end of this diagnosis, carried out in 11 days, Data Acteur presented us with a detailed action plan.

Initially, our mission was to identify the key points of the digital transformation of our company. However, this collaboration exceeded our expectations. We entrusted Audrey with the mission of training the Data team and raising awareness among internal stakeholders about the importance of data. In addition to her technical skills, Audrey excels in transmitting her knowledge, which has allowed us to gain autonomy. She is also an excellent Data coach.

Audrey not only supports us in the implementation of the action plan and the coaching of the data team, but she also helped us develop our first data valuation intended for our customers. Her intervention was extremely beneficial in acculturating both our internal employees and our customers on the use of data, taking into account the maturity of each. Thanks to her invaluable help, we were able to review our offer to guarantee that our customers can follow each step, without getting lost along the way.

5/ What were the concrete benefits of this work on data for your company?

The restructuring of our Data team was one of the main benefits: a clearer framing of everyone’s tasks, the implementation of complete documentation, more serene project management and increased productivity. Acculturation to data and the implementation of new processes also benefited the entire company thanks to personalized support.

The most important benefit, in my opinion, is the emergence of a reflection around data in the minds of each employee of our company. This awareness, which was not concrete before, has transformed our corporate culture. Now, everyone approaches data in a transversal manner, which has considerably improved exchanges and understanding of needs.

6/ Would you recommend Data Acteur to other companies? For what reasons?

Absolutely, even if it would mean sharing our key to success! I highly recommend Data Acteur to all companies wishing to enhance the value of their data. Their intervention facilitates the work of your employees. The teams can then focus on their expertise rather than on time-consuming processing tasks. The improvements made to the daily life of your teams thanks to the expertise of Data Acteur are invaluable. Data Acteur experts do not just provide steps to follow, but also help to understand Data issues in depth in a transversal manner. Data Acteur teaches you to manage your data in the same way that a good manager supervises his team, thus laying the foundations for a real digital transformation.

My name is Audrey Lamy Martinot and I am the founder of Data Acteur.

Three years ago, I decided to embark on this adventure after spending 20 years observing recurring issues in the field of data. These observations, which are still relevant today, were the catalyst for my decision to create this company. Our mission is to support organizations in managing and enhancing their data.

Initially, an observation

Over the course of my career, I noticed that very few companies and communities were really using the potential of data. Even among my friends and colleagues in the sector, the observation was unanimous: data remained a field reserved for experts, whereas in my opinion, everyone should feel concerned. I was often told: « I don’t understand what you do – what’s the point? » » or even: « For my part, I am not concerned by data, it is the IT department that takes care of it! ».

Upon arrival, many challenges

Many people were becoming aware that data was part of their daily lives, but did not know how to use it effectively. The massive accumulation of data overwhelmed them, leading to incorrect decision-making.

In addition, the organization to be set up around the data was often nebulous.

I remember a colleague who told me: « 50% of our customers are unhappy ». When I dug deeper, I discovered that this figure was based on only two returns. Another example, following the sending of a letter based on erroneous information, it generated so many incoming calls that a second letter had to be sent to apologize, resulting in a considerable loss of time and money. The impact of a misinterpretation of data can be catastrophic!

The indicators provided remain invariably the same, but the reason for their use has been forgotten. This no longer provides a clear, relevant and understandable vision. I have often heard this justification: « We continue to calculate them because it is historical! »

Data was seen only as a tool to generate dashboards and monitoring, while it can have a much broader impact on humans and processes. Data management was not integrated upstream of the valorization of data and mathematical models, which is a mistake.

A result, the creation of Data Acteur

These observations prompted me to create Data Acteur, with the aim of supporting the integration of data into everyone’s daily life and transmitting best practices. We are working to link the data office with the professions and the IT department, because everyone has a role to play.

Data Acteur is dedicated to breaking down silos between technicians and businesses, making data accessible and understandable to all, and enhancing data in a cross-functional manner to extract its best value. We believe that data must be integrated from the beginning of strategic processes to have a significant impact.

Data Acteur’s aim is to always keep two ideas in mind:

• Data only has value if it is used by businesses.
• None of us knows what we all know together. (Lao Tzu).

Three years after the creation of Data Acteur, I am proud to see how we have been able to support many companies and institutions to better understand, enhance and use their data, improve their processes and make fairer and more informed decisions.

Our mission continues, and we remain committed to providing our expertise and know-how to manage your data until it is optimally enhanced.

Contact me to discuss your findings!
